Many things looked different in 2020, but Rescue Village’s Education Department was determined to bring one feature back in the summer of 2021…Summer Camp!
Due to the CDC guidelines and COVID-19 policies, we had to make a few adjustments to the program but overall camp was a smashing success. A popular program for children ages 9-12, Summer Camp has always been a favorite, inviting both kids and animals to learn and coexist while participating in fun-filled activities.
Some of the changes we made this year involved implementing ‘themed’ camp weeks that focused on dogs, cats, barn animals, and special species. Campers got to choose which theme they wanted to attend and even the opportunity to register for multiple weeks. Our weeks focused specifically on those animal groups, which included themed projects and guest speakers. This change allowed campers the chance to concentrate on animal groups that interested them the most and enhanced their learning and knowledge of those types of animals. With limitations on class size, campers were able to receive more personalized one-on-one experiences which kept them engaged and excited and allowed more animals to participate in the program.
Activities included making treats, crafting blankets and toys, socializing animals, and even a few shelter chores. Guest speakers included the Geauga Sheriff’s Department, Herps Alive, Skunkhaven, The Cleveland Zoo, Rescue Village’s Cat & Dog Behaviorists, and our wonderful therapy dog Ambassadors and Barn Crew.
