Three-month-old Denny arrived at Rescue Village in pretty bad shape. His left eye was crusted and swollen shut, and his ears were infested with mites. The clinic staff found that he had intestinal parasites, and on top of everything, he tested positive for feline leukemia. With regular veterinary care, cats with feline leukemia can enjoy a good quality of life, but they typically have a shorter lifespan than other cats and this can make finding a new family for them difficult.
It soon became clear to Rescue Village’s medical team that it would take a while to get Denny feeling better when they found his left eye was blind due to some kind of trauma he experienced in his short life, possibly an infection or injury. Further monitoring found the eyelids on his good right eye roll inward, causing his eyelashes to rub against his eye, which could lead to infections and blindness. And to add insult to injury, our veterinarian found that Denny had a slight heart murmur!
Denny was officially a hot mess. It was going to take someone very special to adopt Denny – keeping him healthy would require a serious commitment of time and money.
Denny saw many potential adopters come and go. While this cute, one-eyed kitten waited, the staff provided enrichment, a proper diet, and special medical appointments. Volunteers and visitors just adored him, with one Girl Scout falling head over heels for him. While cuddling him, she softly said, “I think I want to be a vet.”
Not every animal needs as much care as Denny, but Rescue Village is committed to each and every animal in its care for as long as it takes. Denny was finally adopted after 70 days in our care. His new family came to look at another kitten that was no longer available, but when they saw Denny, it was love at first sight–especially for the son, who bonded with Denny right away.
Denny went home with a family that was dedicated to continuing his medical care, and being the only pet in the new home, he’s sure to get all the love and attention he will need for the long haul. Rescue Village ensures that every animal gets a fighting chance at a healthy, happy life and won’t give up on an animal no matter how difficult their road to recovery may be.
